A suspected case of Mpox has been identified in Malappuram, Kerala. A man who recently returned from Dubai displayed symptoms of the disease. State Health Minister Veena George revealed that the man isolated himself as soon as he noticed the symptoms and is currently being treated at Manjeri Medical College.
Kerala's Health Minister disclosed that the patient's samples have been sent for testing, with results pending. Earlier, district health officials reported that the man had arrived in Kerala a few days ago and was initially admitted to a private hospital upon falling ill.
26-year-old man infected with Mpox
An official stated, “He was referred from there to Manjeri Medical College. Suspecting Mpox, we have sent his samples to Kozhikode Medical College. We are awaiting the test results.” Last week, a new case of Mpox was reported from the national capital when a 26-year-old man from Hisar, Haryana, was found to be infected with the virus. He was admitted to Delhi Government's LNJP Hospital.
The Union Health Ministry called it an isolated case. According to the Ministry, this case was different from the 30 other Mpox cases reported in India since July 2022. The World Health Organization recently declared Mpox a public health emergency, and the cases found in India differ from this declaration. The global organization declared Mpox a PHEIC for the second time last month.
How does Mpox spread?
Mpox virus is generally self-limiting, lasting between two to four weeks. It typically spreads through prolonged and close contact. Symptoms include fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes.
