Members of Parliament from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) met Prime Minister Modi on Friday. During the meeting, they also handed over a memorandum to PM Modi.

The BJP SC/ST MPs met with PM Modi in the Parliament building and presented a memorandum demanding that the decision related to sub-quotas within quotas in our society should not be implemented.

Last week, the Supreme Court approved the provision of sub-quotas within the categories of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The court said that new sub-categories within SC-ST can be created and the most backward sections can be given separate reservations under these.

Currently, Scheduled Castes (SC) are given 15% reservation and Scheduled Tribes (ST) receive 7.5% reservation in the country. Following the Supreme Court's verdict, state governments can determine a separate quota within this 22.5% reservation for the weaker sections of SC and ST castes.

The Supreme Court allowed state governments to create sub-quotas, stating they cannot make decisions based on their own will and political ambition. If they do, such decisions can be subject to judicial review.

If a state provides a sub-quota to a particular caste, it must prove that it is based on backwardness. It will also be ensured that no single class within SC-ST is given 100% of the total reservation granted to SC-ST.
