Chief Justice (CJI) BR Gavai has orchestrated a major roster revamp in the Supreme Court after two controversial orders by the bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan.
The first matter involved the Allahabad High Court. The bench had ruled that a high court judge should not hear any criminal cases until retirement and must serve only in benches led by senior judges. This sparked significant controversy, prompting CJI Gavai to intervene, asking the bench to reconsider its order, resulting in an amendment of their decision.
The second issue revolved around stray dogs in Delhi-NCR. On August 11, the bench ordered all stray dogs to be removed from streets and relocated to shelter homes, leading to national backlash. Consequently, CJI Gavai swiftly reassigned the matter from Justice Pardiwala's bench to a newly constituted three-judge bench.
Following these developments, the Supreme Court's roster saw changes. Justice K.V. Viswanathan joins Justice Pardiwala's bench, while Justice R Mahadevan is now part of Justice B.V. Nagarathna's bench.
