In a firm stance against stray dogs, the Supreme Court issued stringent directives on Monday. It ordered the immediate capture, sterilization, and permanent sheltering of stray dogs in Delhi-NCR. Congress senior leader Rahul Gandhi has responded to this decision.

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, stated that the Supreme Court's directive to remove all stray dogs from Delhi-NCR is a step back from a humane and science-based policy that has existed for decades. These voiceless creatures are not a problem to be eradicated.

He argued that shelters, sterilization, vaccination, and community care are the measures that can keep streets safe without cruelty. However, the abrupt decision for mass removal of dogs is brutal, shortsighted, and lacks compassion. We can ensure public safety and animal welfare together.

The Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognizance of the stray dogs issue. The court had directed the establishment of shelter homes within eight weeks and ordered a campaign to capture 5,000 dogs within six weeks, starting in sensitive areas. Strict action was proposed against those obstructing this procedure.

On July 28, the Supreme Court had noted incidents of deaths caused by rabies from stray dog attacks as highly concerning and frightening.
