A sudden cloudburst on Tuesday triggered a devastating flash flood in Dharali village, Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, presenting a scene so harrowing it would raise goosebumps on the bravest. Within seconds, this phenomenon transformed the area — much more than just a natural disaster, it was an unforgettable spectacle terrifying enough to unsettle even the strong-hearted. Panic-stricken eyes, muffled cries buried under debris, it was a moment of sheer survival with everyone scrambling to find safety, without a clue where to run.
Amid these prevailing scenes, a video emerged vividly capturing the chaotic escape of people from hotels and guest houses in a frantic bid to save themselves. The minutes suddenly turn aggressive as the flood-tide and debris wall descends upon them ferociously. The person recording the video shouts warnings to those fleeing for their lives, but many get caught in the surging waters and silt, as if rivers filled with mud and debris had turned into relentless torrents coursing through lanes, sweeping people away.
"Run... Run!"
The individual capturing the frightening footage yells, "Run for your lives!", yet several are already overtaken by the rapid waters. The sudden onrush in the Khir Ghad Gadhera swiftly swamped hotels, restaurants, and homes nestled along roadsides within minutes. Cries for help and attempts to reach relatives could be distinctly heard.
According to eyewitness accounts, around 20 to 25 hotels and homestays were engulfed by the flood. Water descended so swiftly, leaving no room for many even to flee. Vehicles, shops, and under-construction buildings were rapidly submerged.

Four Confirmed Dead, Many Missing
District Magistrate Prashant Arya of Uttarkashi confirmed four casualties and indicated that 10 to 12 people might remain beneath the debris. The network outage posed significant challenges in obtaining clear information. Rescue operations continue, as teams led by the Army, ITBP, SDRF, and NDRF personnel strive tirelessly at the site. Three more NDRF teams have been dispatched from Manera, Barkot, and Dehradun.

Eyewitness Describes Horrifying Scene
A local eyewitness recounted the catastrophe today (Tuesday) stating that the flood struck at approximately 1:30 PM, wreaking havoc throughout Dharali. Approximately 60 to 70 people remain unaccounted for, as connections could not be made with them. The witness shared that a similar flood had swept Kanjodia on this very date, August 5, in 1978. Today's destruction in Dharali was unprecedented. The prevailing disaster obliterated hotels, lodges, markets, and villages, an overwhelming specter witnessed from their village, Mukhwa. The witness claimed to have never seen anything like it before.
