When the film 'Baazigar' hit the screens in 1993, crafted by the visionary directors Abbas-Mustan, few knew the challenges of finalizing the cast hidden behind the scenes. The quest for the perfect lead was a whirlwind, until they struck gold with Shah Rukh Khan alongside Kajol and Shilpa Shetty. Post 'Baazigar', Khan's stardom skyrocketed to soaring heights.
Sridevi as 'Baazigar's' Leading Lady
No hero of the era was keen to embrace a negative role, placing Abbas-Mustan in a directorial conundrum. At a crossroads, the suggestion surfaced to cast Sridevi in a double act. However, this idea didn't receive their nod of approval.
Directors' Tale of Casting
The producers from Venus Films proposed Sridevi for the dual roles of Priya and Seema, later portrayed by Kajol and Shilpa Shetty. They believed that after Seema's demise, Priya staying in the limelight would enhance Sridevi's screen presence. Nevertheless, the concept didn't align with the directors' vision.
"We contemplated that with Shah Rukh almost in a double role, duplicating the sisters could overcomplicate the plot for the audience. Hence, we refused the proposition and explored other ideas. Considering Sridevi or Juhi Chawla for the part would sway audience's sympathies towards them, overshadowing the narrative. It was pivotal for Seema's untimely death to shock the audience, maintaining their engagement. Ultimately, we decided to onboard fresh faces," explain Abbas-Mustan.
Post their success with 'Khiladi', meeting Shah Rukh Khan was an exhilarating prospect for the directors. Khan insisted on a personal narration from Abbas-Mustan, which led to his prompt agreement to star in the film.
This role marked a pivotal turn in Shah Rukh Khan's career trajectory; 'Baazigar' and 'Darr' left an indelible mark on his audience. Today, this 'Badshah' rules the hearts of millions.
