Early Friday morning, as the nation's capital was soaked by a heavy downpour, a tragic incident occurred around 5 am. The canopy at Delhi Airport's Terminal-1 collapsed, resulting in the death of cab driver Ramesh Kumar, aged 45, and injuries to 6 others. Ravinder Kumar, Ramesh's son, told Aaj Tak that they were informed by the police around 8:30 am that his father had been in an accident and had suffered injuries. The police asked them to come immediately. Due to the morning traffic jam, they traveled part of the way on foot, finally reaching the hospital. Upon arrival, the police made them wait for two hours before telling them to come back in the morning to claim the body. Ravinder said they weren't even allowed to see his father's face.

In a heartfelt discussion, Ravinder Kumar, the son of Ramesh Kumar, detailed that their last conversation occurred around 3 am with his brother, mentioning his father's trip to the airport from Faridabad with a passenger. Ramesh had been driving a cab for four years. Ravinder highlighted that their family, consisting of their mother, two sisters, and two brothers, depended solely on their father for financial support. He also expressed the family's plea to the government for compensation and a job provision.

'He was the sole breadwinner of the family'

Rajesh Kumar, Ramesh Kumar's brother, shared how devastating it was to learn about the incident. With two daughters in the family needing to be married, the concern for their futures weighed heavily on him, wondering how they would manage without their father. Rajesh, who also drives for a living, lamented the lack of employment opportunities and described the event as incredibly sorrowful. He was astounded that such an accident could happen at such a large airport, raising concerns about the safety of workers like himself. He also noted that several people were injured, and multiple vehicles were damaged in the incident. Rajesh mentioned that the police denied them the chance to see his brother's face and restricted their access to the site.

An FIR has been registered regarding the Terminal-1 collapse. Delhi Police have filed a case against unknown persons based on the statements of a Sub-Inspector. The FIR includes charges under IPC Sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 337 (endangering the life or personal safety of others).
