Smartphone shipments in India grew by 7.2% in the first half of 2024, with 69 million devices shipped. This information comes from market research firm IDC. In the second quarter, 35 million smartphones were shipped, which is 3.2% higher than the same quarter last year.
Several companies launched new smartphones in the second quarter, benefitting shipment numbers. It is hoped that sales will also increase in the second half of the year due to the festive season. The number of premium phones is expected to rise in this period.
According to IDC, sales of entry-level smartphones have decreased. Shipments for this segment saw a 36% fall compared to the same quarter last year. This drop was seen in phones priced up to ₹8,400, with entry-level phones now holding a 14% share of the market.

In this price range, Xiaomi and Poco dominate. The mass-market segment, priced between ₹8,400 to ₹16,800, saw an 8% growth, with Xiaomi leading in this segment as well.

The entry-level premium or mid-range segment saw a 42% growth for phones priced between ₹16,800 to ₹33,500, with Oppo, Vivo, and Samsung leading. However, the premium mid-range market (₹33,500 to ₹50,400) shrank by 25%, with Vivo and OnePlus being the top players.

Meanwhile, the premium handset segment (₹50,400 to ₹67,100) saw a 37% drop in shipments. The super premium smartphone segment grew by 22% in the second quarter, with this category now holding a 7% share of the total market.
