The Election Commission has announced the full schedule for the legislative assembly elections in Sikkim, to be held concurrently with the general elections. Voting will take place in a single phase on April 19, with counting on June 4. The current assembly's term concludes on June 2, 2024. The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), led by Prem Singh Tamang, presently holds the chief minister's office in the 32-seat assembly.
Here is the complete election schedule for Sikkim:
The SKM currently enjoys majority rule in the state, guided by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, with 17 of the assembly's seats.
The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) recently announced candidates for six seats. The former Chief Minister, Pawan Kumar Chamling, aims for a record-breaking ninth term as MLA from Namchi-Singhithang.
Previously, voting occurred in a single phase
In 2019, Sikkim conducted its assembly election in conjunction with the Lok Sabha election on April 11, 2019. The contest primarily featured the SKM and the SDF. Post-election, the SDF, a prominent party in Sikkim for 25 years, secured 15 seats.
Conversely, the SKM won 17 seats, sufficient for a simple majority, leading to the swearing-in of Prem Singh Tamang (P.S. Golay) as the Chief Minister of Sikkim. Additionally, no candidates from other political parties such as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Indian National Congress (INC), or Hamro Sikkim Party managed to win any seats.
