After the general elections, the political corridors are now abuzz with the assembly elections. Following the opposition's stellar performance in the general elections, farmer protests could take center stage in the assembly elections. Farmers have been continuously protesting for minimum support price (MSP) even before the assembly elections. Predictions suggest the MSP issue could significantly impact the assembly elections. Amidst this, various surveys are being conducted among the public to gauge if farmers should get a legal guarantee for MSP. Let's explore what the public thinks about this matter.
87 Percent Support Legal MSP
In a survey conducted by the India Today Group, 87% of respondents believe that farmers should get a legal guarantee for MSP, while 9% are against it. This insight was revealed in the India Today Mood of the Nation poll. Farmers have been protesting for MSP since February 13. Besides MSP, farmers are also demanding the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission's recommendations and pensions for farmers and agricultural laborers.

What is MSP?
The government buys crops from farmers at a predetermined rate known as MSP (Minimum Support Price). The aim of MSP is to ensure that farmers receive a minimum assured amount for their crops. It also serves as a security cover during market fluctuations. To put it simply, assume that there is a bumper crop in a year, leading to a drop in market prices. Farmers could suffer significant losses in such scenarios. MSP acts like an insurance policy for farmers during these times. In 2020-21, when farmers were protesting against agricultural laws, trust in MSP was a significant reason behind their movement.
23 Crop Types under MSP
MSP includes 23 types of crops. These are seven grains (rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, pearl millet, barley, and finger millet), five pulses (chickpea, pigeon pea, moong bean, urad bean, lentil), seven oilseeds (groundnut, rapeseed-mustard, soybean, sesame, sunflower, safflower, Niger seed), and four commercial crops (copra, sugarcane, cotton, and raw jute).
