In the district of Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, an astonishing cache of 18th-century weapons has emerged from a farmer's field, leaving villagers in awe. During routine plowing, the farmer heard his plow striking metal beneath the earth. Upon excavation, a trove of ancient swords, daggers, spears, and guns came to light, all hidden underground for generations.
Local police and the revenue department rushed to the scene upon receiving the alert, promptly informing the archaeology department. Even Tilhar MLA Salona Kushwaha made her way to the site. The news quickly spread, drawing a large crowd of locals eager to witness the historic discovery. Experts believe these weapons to be over 200 years old.
In the Nigohi police station area of Dakiya Tiwari village, it was while plowing that these ancient relics were discovered buried beneath the surface. Babu Ram, a local resident, recounted how some days before, he had his field excavated with a JCB and was plowing for the first time afterward when he heard the distinct metal clang. On careful digging, ancient swords, daggers, spears, and guns revealed themselves from the earth's embrace.
Another villager, Omveer Singh, shared that the area was once an orchard before Babu Ram acquired the land. Previous villagers frequently collected soil from here, but now, for the first time under his ownership, he plowed the land, only to discover remnants of ancient weaponry including a gun barrel and spear when further unearthed.
From a historical perspective, historian Vikas Khurana remarked that firearms were introduced in this region during the 18th century, initially by Babur's forces. While yet to see the swords firsthand, reports suggest they boast silver inlays and show signs of rust, marking their antiquity. An official study is being requested from the district magistrate. Moreover, the gun found has its wooden parts eaten away by termites, leaving only the barrel intact, estimated to be nearly 200 years old.
