Giani Harpreet Singh, one of the Jathedars involved in delivering a religious sentence to Sukhbir Singh Badal, the head of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), has been suspended from his duties. Giani Harpreet Singh was among five Singh Sahibs who sanctioned actions against Punjab's former Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal.
According to news agencies, Giani Harpreet Singh, Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, was accused of harassment by Muktasar resident Gurpreet Singh. This led the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to suspend Giani Harpreet Singh from his duties.
The SGPC has set up a three-member committee to investigate the allegations against Giani Harpreet Singh. In the meantime, the chief Granthi of Damdama Sahib will serve in his place.
The decision to impose a temporary ban on Giani Harpreet Singh was taken during a special session of the executive committee at Gurdwara Degsar Sahib Katana in Ludhiana. The meeting was presided over by SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami.
Decision: Investigation is Essential
During the meeting, Gurpreet Singh's complaint against Jathedar Harpreet Singh was thoroughly discussed. An SGPC statement emphasized the necessity of an investigation to uphold the dignity and respect associated with the position of Jathedar.
Report Due in 15 Days
A sub-committee was formed through a resolution passed in the meeting, including SGPC Senior Vice President Raghujeet Singh Virk, General Secretary Sher Singh Mandwala, and executive member Daljeet Singh Bhinder. SGPC stated that the sub-committee will conduct a full inquiry and submit its report within 15 days.
