As June reaches its midpoint, Delhi grapples with an unabating heatwave. Both days and nights are unusually hot. According to the Meteorological Department, this June has been exceedingly warm. A record high of 47°C was reached this month, the highest in over a decade, breaking the 15-year-old record for hottest June ever.

Previously in 2023, the highest June temperature was 41.8°C. In 2022, it hit 44.2°C, and in 2021, 43°C. Furthermore, in 2019, another notably hot year, a peak of 45.6°C was recorded. However, this year has seen a sweltering 47°C recorded, shattering a 15-year record.

15-Year Heat Record Shattered in Delhi

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature recorded on June 1st at Delhi's Safdarjung was 43.9°C, significantly surpassing the typical maximum of 39.9°C for that date. The minimum temperatures this June have also been higher than usual. Typically, the minimum temperature around this time of the year is around 28°C. However, this year, it has recorded above average. On June 16th, the minimum temperature crossed 32.2°C, significantly above the normal. The steady increase in nighttime temperatures is worrisome. June 2024’s record-breaking heat clearly indicates that climate change and global warming are leading to severe heatwaves in India this year.

When Will Relief from the Heat Arrive?

The Meteorological Department predicts the current heatwave in Delhi will continue today. However, relief may come starting June 19th due to a Western Disturbance, bringing winds and the possibility of light rain with thunderstorms.

Why Is It So Hot This Year?

This year's increase in temperatures is mainly due to global climate change. Global warming is causing record-shattering temperatures in India. The El Niño phenomenon is another factor contributing to the severe heat. The intense heat is also leading to rising ocean temperatures, which affects weather patterns worldwide.
