The Congress party has unveiled its list of 21 candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. This announcement followed a decisive meeting of the Central Electoral Committee (CEC) on Thursday.
Finalized Candidates
From diverse constituencies, the Congress has chosen candidates like Aruna Kumari for Narela, Mangesh Tyagi for Burari, Shivank Singhal for Adarsh Nagar, and Devendra Yadav for Badli. The ticket was given to Jai Kishan in Sultanpur Majra and Rohit Chaudhary in Nangloi Jat, while Praveen Jain will represent Salimgarh. Ragini Nayak will lead the contest in Wazirpur, Anil Bhardwaj in Sadar Bazaar, and Mudit Agarwal in Chandni Chowk. Haroon Yusuf will contest in Ballimaran, PS Bawa in Tilak Nagar, Adarsh Shastri in Dwarka, with Sandeep Dikshit taking on New Delhi.
In Kasturba Nagar, Abhishek Dutt has been nominated, Rajendra Tanwar in Chhatarpur, Jai Prakash in Ambedkar Nagar, Garvit Singhal in Greater Kailash, and Anil Kumar in Patparganj. Silampur will see Abdul Rahman as the candidate, and Ali Mehdi is set to contest from Mustafabad.
During a strategic meeting chaired by Mallikarjun Kharge, attended by prominent figures like former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, CEC members Ambika Soni, Salman Khurshid, TS Singh Deo, and Musasdan Mistry, the candidates were meticulously selected and approved.
Highlights of the List
From Northeast Delhi' Silampur, the Congress has nominated Abdul Rahman, an incumbent MLA who recently joined the party from AAP. AAP, however, has replaced him with Zubair Ahmed, a former Congress member. In Mustafabad, Ali Mehdi, son of ex-legislator Hasan Ahmed, is contesting. In 2022, Ali's brief switch to AAP and back to Congress became noteworthy.
For Patparganj, the contender is veteran leader Chaudhary Anil Kumar, opposing AAP's Avadh Ojha and potentially BJP's Ravinder Singh Negi.
Dwarka's candidate is Adarsh Shastri, grandson of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, who has previously been associated with AAP.
No Alliance with AAP
Initially considering a pre-election alliance, both Congress and AAP have now resolved to contest the Delhi elections independently, as affirmed publicly by their leaders. AAP has already declared 31 out of its 70 candidates and aims to finalize the remaining soon, paving the way for Congress and BJP to reveal their full lists.
