Sahibzada Farhan, Pakistan’s opening batsman, shattered a 12-year-old record at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on a thrilling Saturday. He claimed the title for the most runs scored in a single season, previously held by India’s star, Virat Kohli.
During a high-stakes clash against Sri Lanka in Pallekele, Farhan achieved this monumental feat. Sri Lanka opted to bowl first after winning the toss. As Farhan surpassed the 38-run mark during his innings, he edged past Kohli’s 2014 record.
Record Smashed!
In the 2014 T20 World Cup, Kohli had set the bar high with 319 runs across six matches, a record that stood for 12 years. Now, at the 2026 tournament, Sahibzada Farhan has exceeded 320 runs.
Interestingly, the top five in the list of highest run-scorers in a single T20 World Cup season are all Asian players.
Most Runs in a Single Season (T20 World Cup)
Sahibzada Farhan (Pakistan) – 320* runs (2026)
Virat Kohli (India) – 319 runs (2014, 6 matches)
Tillakaratne Dilshan (Sri Lanka) – 317 runs (2009, 7 matches)
Babar Azam (Pakistan) – 303 runs (2022, 6 matches)
Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) – 302 runs (2010, 6 matches)
Notably, in 2022, Babar Azam closely approached Kohli’s record with 303 runs but couldn't surpass it. Now, Farhan has rewritten history by breaking a 12-year record.
