The US has persistently pressured India to discontinue Russian oil purchases. Following the Ukrainian conflict, America, having imposed numerous sanctions on Russia, desires India to buy oil from them instead. It was communicated that oil tankers scheduled for India should offload by February 27, beyond which sanctions would be enforced.

Is America Trying to Drive a Wedge Between India and Russia?

Amidst the ongoing Ukraine conflict, the US appears intent on undermining relations between India and Russia, despite India maintaining a neutral stance.

India has continued trade with Russia, importing and exporting as opportunities arise, despite US sanctions. When the chance arose, India rapidly pursued significant purchases of Russian crude oil. Although questioned by the Biden administration, India clarified its intent to seek advantageous trading opportunities globally.

Despite Western sanctions, economic ties between India and Russia continue strengthening. They aim to elevate their bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030, exploring alternative routes to enhance trade efficiency.

However, a January report threatened their amicable relations, indicating US-imposed sanctions on Russian oil might substantially restrain Russia’s oil exports, potentially impacting India's imports.

Nevertheless, India maintains clarity on its oil purchasing stance: it remains open to any seller offering cost-effective oil. India imports oil from several suppliers, including the US, Russia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Iraq. While US sanctions have slightly complicated Russian oil purchases, India continues its procurement.

The ongoing complexities have not deterred India's resolve as it navigates its international relations pragmatically.
