The Aam Aadmi Party has declared candidates for 4 out of Delhi's 7 Lok Sabha seats for the upcoming 2024 general elections. Meanwhile, BJP's candidate discussions continued late into Thursday night at the party headquarters. Despite the meeting, candidate announcements are still forthcoming. The list of candidates is being contemplated nationally, including all of Delhi's Lok Sabha seats.
Delhi state President Virendra Sachdeva, Opposition Leader Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Organization Minister Pawan Rana, Delhi BJP in-charge Baijayant Panda, and co-in-charge Alka Gurjar were present. The meeting focused on the current Delhi MPs, but no final decisions have been made, leading to potential further discussions.
Could Several MPs' Tickets Be Cut?
BJP has continuously won all of Delhi's Lok Sabha seats since 2014. In 2019, the party succeeded again, with five incumbents from 2014 remaining. East Delhi and North West Delhi seats had new BJP candidates, cricketer Gautam Gambhir and singer Hans Raj Hans, respectively. Party insiders suggest that the BJP may replace up to 5 sitting MPs in the forthcoming elections, though their identities have yet to be disclosed.
Reasons Behind the Potential Ticket Cuts
The possibility of cutting five MPs' tickets is linked to their anti-incumbency stance. Unhappiness among workers and MPs spending little time in their constituencies are other cited reasons. The BJP is also considering infusing new faces and young leaders into the team, those who have worked diligently for the organization. Moreover, the party plans to field candidates that can effectively compete with Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party. Delhi's assembly elections will follow approximately 9 months after the Lok Sabha elections.
Who is Pushing to Become an MP?
Every BJP worker hopes that receiving a Lok Sabha ticket can assure victory thanks to the Modi wave. Everyone wants their chance at the battle. South Delhi's Opposition Leader Ramvir Singh Bidhuri aspires to fight the election. Vishnu Mittal from East Delhi is also looking to try his luck. Vijay Goel, former state president, wants to run from Chandni Chowk.
