The monsoon has made its arrival in Kerala and Maharashtra. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds across several parts of the country on Sunday. A red alert has been issued, in particular, for several districts in Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Kerala, and Karnataka, while a yellow alert is in place for Delhi-NCR.
According to the meteorological department, the monsoon will advance over Karnataka (including Bengaluru), parts of Andhra Pradesh, the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, and the northeast in the next three days.
Furthermore, the southwest monsoon has reached Maharashtra, breaking a 35-year record. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that the monsoon will reach Mumbai and other parts of the state in the next three days. Previously, the monsoon had reached Maharashtra on May 20, 1990.
Weather expert and former secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, M. Rajeevan, stated that it is not unusual for the monsoon to spread over large areas in the initial phase. In 1971, the monsoon covered large parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra on the first day itself. This time, the active monsoon conditions are likely to persist until June 2, advancing further into Maharashtra and eastern India.

Meanwhile, monsoon showers have caused significant havoc in Kerala on Sunday. Trees fell in various parts of the state, resulting in one fatality, while a fallen tree narrowly avoided causing a major accident with a moving train. IMD has issued a red alert in districts like Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, where over 20 cm of rain is likely. An 'Orange Alert' has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad, expecting 11–20 cm of rain.
