In the midst of election fervour, opposition parties have been cornering the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over constitutional issues. The Congress accuses the BJP of planning to alter the Constitution should it win a significant majority. PM Modi, in an exclusive conversation with Aaj Tak, has responded sharply to these accusations, naming the Gandhi family as the true violators of the Constitution.
PM Modi declared that Pandit Nehru was the first to amend the Constitution post its inception, restricting freedom of speech. He went on to say that it was subsequently Nehru's daughter, Indira Gandhi, who declared an emergency, set aside court judgments, and nullified her own election—committing a blatant breach of the Constitution.
As far as Rajiv Gandhi, her son, is concerned, he attempted to bring in a bill to control Indian media. A public uproar saved the situation, but the intent was clear—an affront to the Constitution's fundamental ethos. PM Modi criticized Rahul Gandhi, stating that his actions at press conferences went beyond tearing up papers; they were akin to shredding the Constitution and backstabbing Dr. Ambedkar—the principal architect of the Indian Constitution.
On the topic of reservations, PM Modi reiterated that BJP does not, and will not, support reservations based on religion. He cited the Constituent Assembly's intentions and Dr. Ambedkar's viewpoint, which was opposed to faith-based reservations within the Constitution.
The Prime Minister assured that his party is working hard to uphold the principles set forth by the Constitution, a document that BJP reveres. He accused the opposition of attempting to introduce reservations on religious grounds, which he vowed to prevent. PM Modi also noted that after the initial phases of the elections, the slogan 'over 400 seats' is beginning to look like a reality for the NDA.
