The number of devotees flocking to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi is surging, prompting the police to take a significant decision. Police officers stationed at the sanctum of the Kashi Vishwanath will now be dressed like priests. They will be clad in saffron robes, with Rudraksha beads around their necks and the sacred Tripundra mark upon their brows, offering a serene presence amongst the worshippers.

This transformation comes in response to the need for a gentler policing method, as complaints of rough handling have marred the spiritual experience. Varanasi's Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal has seized upon the notion that temple policing requires a distinct and dedicated approach, hence the introduction of police attire that echoes priestly clothing.

Commissioner Agarwal elaborated that devotees tend to follow a priest's instructions effortlessly. Thus, deploying police officers in priestly garb will facilitate a smoother and respectful navigation for devotees during their visit. The officers will guide them, focusing their attention on the deity amidst the overwhelming crowd and grandeur of the temple, ensuring that devotees don't miss out on the divine darshan of Lord Vishwanath.

Devotees' Comfort a Priority for the Commissioner

The officer shared that not all police personnel would adopt the priestly disguise. Some will remain in their uniforms, maintaining order, while female officers will assist women in moving through the crowd post-darshan. The new experiment also includes a touch policy to handle VIP movements with care, preventing any uncomfortable contact with the congregation. This strategy will allow devotees to maintain a safe distance without getting jostled.

Stress-Free VIP Movement for Devotees

Commissioner Agarwal asserts that forming a roped-off area during VIP movements will help devotees stay clear without feeling pushed aside. Moreover, the officers serving in the temple will undergo a comprehensive three-day training program unlike any other police duty, given the unique environment of the temple. The training will cultivate good communication skills and a basic knowledge of other languages to assist non-local visitors.

Politeness Training for Deployment

The temple's police crew will be trained not only in courteous conduct but will also be briefed on Varanasi's significant sites. A help desk will also be established by the administration to manage pilgrims' inquiries comprehensively. Information leaflets will be supplied to the officers, enabling them to fully satisfy the spiritual curiosity of the visitors.
