On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the highest civilian honor of Trinidad and Tobago, 'The Order of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago', during his visit to the country. Accepting the honor, PM Modi said, "I accept this recognition on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians."

Trinidad and Tobago's Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, along with the entire cabinet, warmly welcomed PM Modi at Piarco International Airport. The welcoming ceremony was notable for the ministers being dressed in traditional Indian attire. Indian mythical characters entertained with cultural performances until PM Modi arrived at his hotel.

In the evening, PM Modi addressed the Parliament. He expressed pride in becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to speak at the prestigious Red House, a landmark that has witnessed Trinidad and Tobago's people's struggle and sacrifice for freedom and respect. Both our nations have emerged from the shadows of colonial rule, crafting their narratives with courage as ink and democracy as pen.

Bihar's Contribution Illuminating the World

PM Modi stated that today, both our countries stand as proud democracies and pillars of strength in the modern world. In India, democracy is not just a political model but a way of life, part of our storied heritage stretching back thousands of years.

Highlighting Bihar's legacy, PM Modi noted its pride for India and the world. Over centuries, Bihar has been a guidepost in democracy, politics, and diplomacy—offering new opportunities in the 21st century. Many of the Parliament members have ancestors from Bihar—the land of great ancient republics.

A Grand Gift for Citizens of Indian Origin

At the hotel, expatriates grandly welcomed PM Modi with chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Modi-Modi’. The lively atmosphere was enhanced by the melodies of Bhojpuri Chautal and orchestra. PM Modi praised the journeys of expatriates, stating they parted with their soil but not their souls. They were couriers of a timeless civilization, not mere migrants.

PM Modi announced a major initiative granting OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) card eligibility to citizens of Indian origin up to the sixth generation. This shall provide them the legal right to live and work in India.

In this small island nation of about 1.3 million people, 45% are of Indian origin, primarily from Bihar and Bhojpuri-speaking districts of Uttar Pradesh. Their ancestors were brought here as indentured laborers during British rule and have since settled.
