In Nepal, after a period of violent protests, normalcy is gradually being restored, marking the beginning of a new era of governance. On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Nepal's interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, describing her ascent to the top position as a remarkable example of women's empowerment. Moreover, the PM expressed his best wishes for a bright future for the Nepalese youth. This message from PM Modi came during his visit to Manipur, where he toured violence-affected regions.

Sushila Karki, the former Chief Justice of Nepal, was officially appointed as the interim Prime Minister late on Friday night after taking the oath of office. Her appointment followed the resignation of her predecessor, K.P. Sharma Oli, who stepped down amid widespread public discontent against his government. Sushila Karki has now made history as the first female Prime Minister of Nepal.

Earlier this week, Nepal witnessed its most intense protests in recent years as Gen-Z activists took to the streets nationwide, demanding the resignation of the Oli government. Initially peaceful demonstrations against rampant corruption and social media restrictions escalated into violence. Protesters torched key government buildings, including the Prime Minister's residence, the Presidential Palace, the Supreme Court, and other prominent structures. Even the personal properties of both current and former prime ministers and ministers were targeted by the angry crowds.

However, a day after Sushila Karki's inauguration, curfews were lifted from most areas in Nepal on Saturday. Shops have reopened, and everyday activities are resuming. Sushila Karki, aged 73, is an alumnus of Banaras Hindu University (BHU). Known for her stringent stance against corruption during her tenure as Chief Justice, she is widely popular among the youth. Upon assuming the post of interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki vowed to restore order in Nepal following the unrest. The interim government has been tasked with conducting national elections by March 2026.
