Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to Tesla CEO Elon Musk's remarks where Musk professed to be a fan of the Prime Minister and an advocate for India. Following a meeting in New York last June, Modi emphasized that Musk's admiration is appreciated, but it is ultimately India that Musk holds in high esteem. 'I have met him, not just now but also previously.'
In an interview with ANI, Modi recounted his 2015 visit to Musk's factory, noting Musk made a point to return and show him around despite being away initially. 'He cancelled all his engagements and returned to the factory to guide me through his establishment. Understanding his vision then was insightful. We met again last year when I was in America, and now he is planning a trip to India.'
Commenting on potential investments by Tesla and Starlink in India, Modi welcomed foreign investment but underscored the importance of domestic manufacturing. 'We eagerly await investment in India, irrespective of who provides the capital, but the sweat poured into the work should belong to our own people. It should carry the fragrance of our soil to secure job opportunities for our youth.' Modi firmly stated: 'I cannot accept our wheat being exported while we import bread. My policies are formulated to counteract that, hence why people are joining the workforce.'
After a Reuters report suggested Tesla was scouting locations in New Delhi and Mumbai for showrooms later this year, Musk confirmed his plan to visit India and meet with Prime Minister Modi.
Moreover, Modi invited electric vehicle companies to invest in India and highlighted the rapidly growing sector within the nation. 'The sales of electric vehicles have jumped from 2,000 units in 2014-15 to over 1.2 million units projected for 2023-24.'
