Opposition members created a commotion in the Rajya Sabha, demanding a discussion on the landslide in Wayanad, Kerala. The opposition had given a notice under Rule 267 for discussion, which the Chairman disallowed. The Chairman stated that both central and state governments are working together to help the victims of this tragic incident. The Prime Minister has spoken to the Chief Minister, and the central government is fully supporting the state.

The leader of the opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, retorted saying, 'Say whatever you want.' Addressing a member, he queried, 'Why are you laughing? Whenever I say something, the Chairman laughs and you laugh too.' To this, Jagdeep Dhankhar responded, 'I am not laughing. My heart is heavy. The government is active, the Home Ministry is active, and the Chief Minister is active.' Expressing dissatisfaction, the leader of the opposition demanded the government disclose whether the military has been deployed and what actions are being taken.

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar sharply reacted to Kharge's statement, saying, 'I understand your sarcasm. Behave with dignity.' The opposition leader insisted on allowing a member to speak who had pertinent information. The Chairman asked him to take a seat and stated that the group's main aim could be allowed only if members approached him in chambers. Nevertheless, the opposition members continued to disrupt the session, demanding a discussion on Wayanad's tragedy. Rajya Sabha members, including Aam Aadmi Party's Sanjay Singh, created a commotion. The Chairman pointed out that no AAP member is from Kerala, questioning the reason for the uproar. Despite the disruption, he proceeded with Zero Hour.

Demand for National Disaster Declaration and Relief Packages

Eventually, the Chairman allowed the members who had approached him in chambers to raise the issue. CPI(M) MP John Brittas demanded immediate military assistance. CPI MP Santosh Kumar called for the disaster to be declared a national calamity. IUML MP Abdul Wahab and KC (M)'s Jose K Mani emphasized the urgent assistance required for Kerala, highlighting the logistical challenges and the death toll of 43 people, including children. Jebi Mather requested a five trillion rupee relief package and helicopter support for rescue efforts. CPIM MP AA Rahim insisted on ensuring proper relief work, while Dr. V Shivdasan urged for all necessary support.

Promise of Necessary Support - Nadda

The Chairman noted having gathered all necessary information, reiterating active coordination. Rajya Sabha Leader of the House JP Nadda assured that all possible support would be provided, affirming the proactive and responsible stance of the government. Emphasizing coordination between the central and state governments, he stressed the urgent need to rescue bodies from the rubble and save lives. He assured the House that no efforts would be spared. G Kishan Reddy mentioned that the army was already present and divulged the recent establishment of the National Landslide Institute.

Government Ready for Detailed Report - Rijiju

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that, with the house's consent, the government is prepared to present a detailed report on the incident. Responding to an interjection from an opposition member, he affirmed preparedness for external scrutiny. Addressing fund release, he reassured that financial support had been disbursed starting early in the fiscal year, with Kerala receiving aid promptly.
