Tensions between India and Pakistan have reached a peak following the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Fearing potential retaliatory action from India, Pakistan is on edge. They are either calling for an impartial third-party investigation into the Pahalgam attack and cooperation or raising the issue at the United Nations Security Council. On Friday, Pakistan stated that amid escalating tensions with India post the Pahalgam terror attack, it has the right to convene a UN Security Council meeting at the appropriate time.
At a press conference, Pakistan's permanent representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, mentioned that all this is happening against the backdrop of the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. Ahmed was responding to a query on whether Pakistan plans to call a Security Council meeting in light of rising tensions with India after the terrorist incident in Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 people. Currently, a temporary member of the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan is set to preside over the 15-nation UN body in July.

Ahmed added, 'We have deliberated with council members. We discussed this with last month's presidency and this month's presidency. Two days after the Pahalgam terrorist attack, on April 24, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at a public rally in Bihar saying, 'We will punish the terrorists, their masters, and the conspirators of this attack harsher than they can imagine. In a high-level meeting on April 29, PM Modi gave the Indian military free rein and stated that the way, targets, and timing of India's response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack should be determined by the military.
