Northern India is currently under the tyranny of a severe heatwave, with some cities experiencing temperatures crossing the scorching 48°C mark. However, Pakistan is enduring even more extreme conditions, where blistering heat has spiked temperatures in the historic cities of Mohenjo-Daro and Dadu to a record 50°C for this season. Other cities have also witnessed mercury levels climbing above 46°C.

Mohenjo-Daro Scorches Beyond the 50°C Threshold

Forecasts by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) hint at the heatwave persisting for at least another week. According to PMD records, on Thursday (23 May), both Sindh's Dadu and Mohenjo-Daro recorded maximum temperatures of 50°C. In addition, cities like Nawabshah and Mithi in Sindh observed highs of 48°C. Mohenjo-Daro is renowned for its archaeological significance, holding a special place in Indian history as well.

Several Cities Experience Temperatures Over 46°C

In Punjab, within Pakistan, DG Khan saw mercury levels touch 47°C, while in Baluchistan's Sibi, temperatures stayed at 48°C. Dera Ismail Khan in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province recorded a peak temperature of 46°C. On Wednesday, Mohenjo-Daro's temperature notably was 49°C.

Pakistan's Heat May Trigger Flash Floods

On May 21st, PMD forecasted on their official channels: "From 21-27 May 2024, the daytime temperature in Gilgit Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is expected to be 4-6°C above normal, potentially escalating the chances of flash floods."

Temperature in India Also Hits Scorching 48.8°C

India, too, is grappling with intense heatwave conditions, with temperatures in Barmer, Rajasthan reaching 48.8°C on Thursday, setting the record for the highest temperature in the country this year. Other northern states are also reeling under heat with temperatures consistently above 43°C. Gujarat has crossed the 45°C mark too.
