Ozempic Formally Launched in India:
With obesity and diabetes on the rise globally, pharmaceutical companies are introducing innovative treatments for these lifestyle diseases. In March 2025, Eli Lilly introduced Mounjaro in India for weight loss, followed by Novo Nordisk's June launch of Wegovy. Today, Novo Nordisk has launched the weight loss medication Ozempic in India. Let’s explore what Ozempic is, its pricing, and how it works.
According to Nordisk's official website, Ozempic is a prescription drug primarily used for controlling blood sugar in Type-2 diabetes. Its main component is Semaglutide, which mimics the function of the natural hormone GLP-1.
GLP‑1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide‑1) is a hormone produced post-meal, playing a crucial role in controlling blood sugar, reducing appetite, and slowing digestion. When using Ozempic, Semaglutide helps curb hunger, maintain blood sugar levels, and slow digestion, aiding in weight reduction.
Vikrant Shrotriya, Managing Director of Novo Nordisk India, states that Ozempic will be available in three doses: 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, and 1 mg. A weekly dose of 0.25 mg costs approximately INR 2200, translating to INR 8800 for four weeks. The 0.5 mg dose is priced at INR 2543 for one week and INR 10170 for four weeks. Similarly, a 1 mg dose costs INR 2793 weekly and INR 11175 for four weeks.
