Currently, Murshidabad in West Bengal is experiencing a tense peace. However, just two days ago, a violent outbreak drove 500 people to flee to Malda. The exodus has not ceased, with more and more people escaping. These displaced villagers have sought refuge in a school in Malda.
The Aaj Tak team visited these villagers to gather information on their ordeal. Over 500 individuals, mainly women and children, are taking shelter at Malda’s Parlalpur High School.
Crossed the River by Boat to Reach Malda
The villagers recount abandoning their homes and crossing the river by boat. Among them are the elderly and infants just three days old. The local residents have been welcoming, providing both food and shelter, but the influx of people continues unabated.

Escaped from Dhuliyan
These refugees have settled down in the classrooms of Malda High School, accompanied by their children. Local doctors are present, conducting medical check-ups at the refugee camp. The evacuees express gratitude for the help from Malda locals. Originating from Dhuliyan, they came to Malda using boats. They claim the water supply was poisoned, a lifeline they now fear to consume. With no safe water or intact homes, evacuation was the only option as looters robbed and set their homes ablaze.

Left with Neither Home Nor Provisions
One of the villagers shared, “My home was in Dhuliyan, Murshidabad. A large number of houses in our village were set on fire. After escaping harassment and seeing our homes looted, we were left with no choice but to flee as even our rations were taken.”
