Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman remarked that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was crystal clear about providing tax relief and supported income tax exemptions in the General Budget. However, convincing the bureaucrats took some time.
In an interview with news agency PTI, the Finance Minister shared that the real question was how long it took for the ministry and the board to align. Although Prime Minister Modi was already determined to take action, the ministry required a transition to a comfortable level before advancing proposals.
When questioned whether it was necessary to convince the bureaucrats, she responded affirmatively. They had valid points, as they needed to be thoroughly assured about revenue generation since it is their responsibility. Yet, everyone eventually agreed.
The Modi government is working on simplifying the Direct Tax System
Nirmala Sitharaman explained that the government has been rigorously working to simplify the direct tax system, reduce compliance burdens, and address taxpayer concerns for a long time. She echoed the common sentiment encountered everywhere she went: citizens want to serve the country by fulfilling their tax obligations, but they also seek consideration on what could be done for them.

'Our government considers inputs from every segment'
Nirmala Sitharaman reiterated that PM Modi and his government have always valued inputs from various fields. She pointed out their practice of engaging with the most deprived groups, tribal communities, and particularly vulnerable groups. Referencing Abraham Lincoln, Sitharaman described the budget as 'by the people, for the people, of the people.' She acknowledged the middle class's voice, noting that the government has considered their concerns.
