A significant milestone has been reached in India's indigenous fighter aircraft program. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to deliver the first two LCA Mk1A jets in October 2025. Despite delays in engine delivery from the USA, HAL has maintained its pace. This aircraft will bolster the Indian Air Force (IAF) capabilities.

What is LCA Mk1A? The Importance of Indigenous Combat Aircraft

The LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) Mk1A is an advanced version of the Tejas, a 4.5 generation multi-role fighter jet built with indigenous technology, including AESA radar, enhanced avionics, an electronic warfare system, and air-to-air refueling capabilities.

Tejas Mk1A will replace older aircraft like the MiG-21, strengthening the IAF's squadron power. In 2021, a deal for 83 aircraft was made at a cost of 480 billion INR, including 73 fighters and 10 trainers. Indigenization will increase from 50% to 60%. This aircraft can operate in high-threat environments, boasting a speed of Mach 1.8 and a range of 1500 km.

Challenges with Engine Delays: Awaiting the F404 from the USA

The primary delay involves GE F404-IN20 engines sourced from the US. In 2021, HAL inked a deal with GE for 99 engines worth 53.75 billion INR. The first engine arrived in April 2025 and the second in July; however, supply chain issues led to delays. Two more engines are due this month, and 12 more by year's end.

GE has promised annual delivery of 20 engines starting in 2026. Due to delays, the first delivery was postponed from March 2024, but HAL has implemented a backup plan using utilized engines. Ten F414 engines (for the Mk2) have already been received.

First Delivery Preparations: 10 Aircraft Ready

According to HAL sources, ten aircraft have been built and tested. The first aircraft from the Nasik plant is ready for handover in October. HAL has launched a third production line at Nasik, capable of producing 24 planes annually. Additionally, two lines are operational in Bengaluru. A total of 83 aircraft will be received by 2029, after slight delays. HAL Chief DK Sunil stated that production is on a firm footing.

Weapon Integration Testing: A Story of Success

The LCA Mk1A successfully tested Astra and ASRAAM missiles. It is equipped to operate with BVRAAM (Beyond Visual Range) missiles, featuring the Uttam AESA radar, EW systems, and BVR missiles.

Additional Deals and Future Plans

An additional deal for 97 more Mk1A aircraft worth 62 billion INR has been sanctioned by the CCS. Cost negotiations are complete, and signing is set for this month. A total of 180 aircraft is expected by 2031-32. The rollout of Mk2 is scheduled for 2027, with the first flight in 2026. HAL is working on upgrading 15 Su-30MKIs. ALH fleet inspection will conclude this month.

The first delivery of the LCA Mk1A in October, despite engine delays, marks a triumph for 'Atmanirbhar Bharat.' HAL is enhancing its capabilities, which will significantly strengthen the IAF. Timely delivery remains critical.
