A dramatic prison break occurred late Tuesday in Nepal's Mahottari district. Inmates capitalized on the chaos and fled, with 576 out of the total 577 prisoners successfully escaping. In Pokhara, 900 prisoners also managed to break free. Protesters infiltrated the prison, prompting the police to retreat, allowing all the inmates an easy exit. Reports have surfaced about escapes from Kathmandu's Nakhu Jail, which was torched by protesters. The former home minister, Ravi Lamichhane, detained in Nakhu, was escorted home by his supporters. A border alert is now in effect at Bihar-UP.

According to sources, the fleeing inmates took personal belongings as well as prison property. The jailbreak sparked alarm among prison officials and police departments.

Local police and security forces have encircled the area to search for the escaped convicts. Authorities have set up blockades at the district borders to capture the fugitives.

Army Issues Statement

Meanwhile, the Nepalese Army has issued a warning to the protesters. In light of the prevailing unrest in Nepal, the army released a statement cautioning against exploiting these challenging times to harm civilians and public properties through arson and looting. The army has appealed to the public to refrain from engaging in such activities.

The army made it clear that if these actions persist, from 10 PM on September 10, 2025, the Nepalese Army, along with all security agencies, will be firmly deployed to control the situation and ensure the protection of the country and its citizens.

The statement also mentioned that a review of the security condition will be conducted and additional information will be shared if required.
