Right Swipe Leads to Fraud: Mumbai Woman Scammed Out of 3.37 Lakhs on Tinder

A 43-year-old woman in Mumbai was cheated out of lakhs by a friend she met on Tinder. The victim, an art director, became friends with someone who called himself Advait on the dating app. Their conversation culminated in the scam.

In a recent case of online dating fraud, a woman from Mumbai was conned. She became friends with a man on Tinder who later swindled 3.37 lakh rupees from her. Realizing she had been duped, she reported the matter to the police, who have since registered a case and launched an investigation.

According to the agency, the 43-year-old woman from Mumbai met a man named Advait on Tinder last month. Professionally, she is an art director. Conversations between them gradually began, and the suspect gained her trust.

Police indicated that Advait had informed the woman that he was abroad and would meet her in Mumbai on September 16. Following this, the woman received a call from someone claiming to be a customs officer from Delhi. The caller falsely alleged that Advait had been caught at the airport with a large sum of euros and needed money for his release.

The victim stated in her complaint that the caller insisted she must urgently transfer 3.37 lakh rupees via UPI if she wished to help Advait. She complied without delay and sent the money.

Later, the same caller reached out again, demanding an additional 4.99 lakh rupees. When the woman went to the bank to transfer this amount, an officer inquired about the reason for the transfer. On hearing her story, the bank officer grew suspicious and warned her that she might be a victim of cyber fraud. This made the woman realize she was being scammed, and she immediately lodged a complaint at Versova Police Station. The police have since registered a case of fraud against unknown culprits and initiated an investigation. For those unfamiliar, Tinder is an online dating app used for meeting new people, making friends, or finding a dating partner.
