Mumbai's Nirmal Nagar police have apprehended a 40-year-old woman charged with the murder of her 19-year-old daughter. Allegedly, a dispute over the choice of a life partner led the mother to strangle her daughter amid an argument. The mother claims her daughter died a natural death, yet the autopsy revealed the truth to the police.

According to police, Tina Umesh Bagde (40), a domestic helper by profession, has struggled financially ever since her husband committed suicide two years ago. Her daughter, Bhoomika Bagde, a first-year commerce student, wished to marry a man not favoured by her mother. An argument over this topic escalated into a physical altercation shortly before midnight on Sunday.

An officer reported that the family lives in Kherwadi, Bandra East. Bhoomika wanted to marry a man known to partake in substance abuse, much to her mother's disapproval. During their fight, Bhoomika bit off a part of her mother’s right index finger, which in a fit of rage, led her mother, Tina, to suffocate Bhoomika. Realizing what she had done, the mother contacted the police, alleging her daughter succumbed to an asthma attack. Police promptly filed an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and sent the body for postmortem.

The autopsy uncovered strangulation signs on Bhoomika's neck, indicating the cause of death. Under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 8, Dikshitkumar Gedam, and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kherwadi Division, Suhas Kamble, an investigation commenced, led by Senior Inspector Shrimant Shinde and Inspector Abdul Rauf Sheikh.

Police interviewed Tina’s two younger children, both minors, who were present at the time of the incident. Her 10-year-old son provided a detailed account of the events, which was corroborated by his 17-year-old sister.

Following the testimony, police converted the ADR to an FIR, charging Tina with murder under IPC Section 302 and disappearance of evidence under Section 201. An officer stated that the accused mother has been arrested and will remain in custody until March 16.
