Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra finds himself in ongoing trouble over remarks concerning Maharashtra’s Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. The Mumbai police remain actively in pursuit. Reports indicate that on Monday, a team of Mumbai police officers reached Kamra’s residence. Reacting to the police's visit, the comedian stated, ‘Going to a place I haven't lived for 10 years is a waste of time and public resources.’
An officer explained that Kunal Kamra had been summoned for questioning at the Khar Police Station regarding his controversial comments made at the Mumbai Habitat Centre, yet he failed to appear. Previously, based on a complaint by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel, Kamra had been issued two summonses following an FIR on March 24.
‘Wasting Time and Public Resources’
In response to the police visit, Kamra took to X to remark, ‘Visiting an address I haven’t lived at for a decade is a waste of your time and public resources.’
Three Separate Cases in Mumbai
According to Mumbai police, three distinct cases are filed against Kamra at Khar Police Station. These include a complaint by the Mayor of Jalgaon City, while the other two are from a Nasik hotelier and a businessman.
On March 23, Kunal Kamra featured a parody version of a song from the 1997 film ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ in an episode that targeted Deputy CM Eknath Shinde.
The comedian faced severe criticism for his act, leading to vandalism by Shiv Sena activists at the venue. Following this, the BMC began demolishing parts of the Habitat Studio.
Kamra: No Apology
Following the incident, Kamra declared he wouldn't apologize for his comments on Shinde and condemned the vandalism at the comedy recording site.
Kamra further stated, ‘I will not apologize... I'm not afraid of the mob and will not hide under my bed waiting for this to blow over.'
Relief from Madras HC
Earlier, Madras High Court provided interim bail to Kamra concerning the FIR. Justice Sunder Mohan remarked, ‘Bail granted with conditions effective until April 7.’
Amidst escalating disputes over contentious remarks about Maharashtra's Deputy CM, Kamra filed for transit anticipatory bail at Madras High Court, citing threats following his recent satirical comments.
In his petition, Kamra conveyed he's been a resident of Tamil Nadu since 2021 and seeks bail over concerns of arrest by Mumbai police. Consequently, Madras High Court awarded interim anticipatory bail to comedian Kunal Kamra on Friday.
