The relentless grip of dense fog and a cold wave continues to trouble North India. Rain has exacerbated the situation further. A light morning drizzle has intensified the cold snap in Delhi and nearby regions.
Even premium trains on the Delhi-Howrah rail route, like the Tejas Rajdhani and Duronto Express, have been enveloped by fog. On Friday, over a dozen trains were delayed by 5 to 16 hours.

Due to dense fog in the plains and snow in the hills, on Friday, January 9, 2026, more than a dozen trains passing through Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Junction were delayed by 5 to 16 hours. This fog phenomenon, which started in the second week of December, is continuing into the new year’s second week, severely affecting train speeds.
The minimum temperature in Eastern Uttar Pradesh's Chandauli and surrounding areas has dropped to 6 to 7 degrees Celsius, leading to bone-chilling cold. Due to the fog, the New Delhi-Bhubaneswar Duronto Express is running 16 hours late, and the Tejas Rajdhani is delayed by 5 hours. Waiting for trains amidst extreme cold and a cold wave is proving to be challenging for passengers at the stations.
Falling Temperatures and Bone-Chilling Cold
The cold wave has settled in the plains of Chandauli and nearby areas. The minimum nighttime temperature is plummeting to 6 to 7 degrees Celsius, while the daytime maximum temperature remains between 14 to 15 degrees. The cold winds and reduced visibility are causing trains to run at a very slow speed, resulting in considerable inconvenience for passengers at the station.
Impact on Train Timings
On Friday, rail traffic was severely disrupted. The New Delhi-Bhubaneswar Duronto is delayed by 16 hours, Bikaner-Howrah Express by 10 hours, and Pratap Superfast by 7 hours. Additionally, Brahmaputra Mail is 6 hours late, Kumbh Express by 5 hours, and Sealdah Duronto by 5:30 hours. Moreover, the New Delhi-Malda Town Express was canceled today, further escalating the plight of commuters.
