'Using China's Name in Bilateral Talks...' Beijing Upset by Modi-Trump Meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a visit to the United States from February 12-13, engaging in comprehensive bilateral discussions with President Trump on various matters. China was a topic of discussion during this interaction. Following their meeting, China has issued a statement reacting to the Modi-Trump interactions. The Chinese Foreign Ministry reiterated on Friday that China should not be made a focal issue in bilateral ties, and any cooperation should not adversely affect the interests of other nations.

During the Washington meeting, critical topics like defense cooperation were extensively discussed, leading to various speculations about China. The joint statement released after the talks emphasized the strong partnership between the United States and India as crucial for a free, open, peaceful, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, and the dialogue included strengthening Quad partnerships among other matters.

China Expresses Its Stance

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jia Kun emphasized that bilateral cooperation should not target third countries. Addressing a question about Trump's offer to provide F-35 fighter jets to India, Guo mentioned, 'China should not be made an issue in relations and cooperation between countries, nor should bloc politics and confrontation be stirred.' He further stated that mutual relationships and cooperation should not target any third party or harm others' interests, and should align with regional peace, stability, and prosperity.

Trump’s Perspective on China

While addressing a question posed by India Today on maintaining stringent trade positions with India, Trump responded by stating, 'We can outmatch anyone, but our goal isn't to outmatch. We are working in the right direction and are doing commendably well.' Trump highlighted that although there was a disruptive administration (referring to Biden) in between, he plans to steer towards exceptional governance strongly once again.

Trump Acknowledges China as a Key Player

In a press conference, responding to another query, President Donald Trump highlighted China as an important nation. Addressing questions about relations with China, Trump expressed optimism, stating, 'I think we will have a great relationship with China. Before COVID-19, my relations with President Xi Jinping were excellent.' Remarking on the Russia-Ukraine ceasefire, he noted, 'China plays a significant role in the global arena. I believe they can assist in ending the conflict with Ukraine and Russia.'

President Trump made a mention of India during the discussion, commenting, 'I notice the incidents on the Indian border are quite intense. If I can assist, I'd be delighted to help. I hope China, India, Russia, and the USA can collaborate together. It's essential.'
