Uttar Pradesh News:

The Mathura Irrigation Department has initiated the process to demolish 300 illegal houses situated between the highway area and Krishnanagar on Govardhan Drain land. In accordance with the Supreme Court's orders, eviction notices with red markings were given to these houses on January 20th. This stern action aims to clear the unauthorized encroachments on the irrigation department’s land from Ganeshra to Potara Kund that have stood for years. Although the seven-day deadline elapsed, the demolition has not commenced by January 28, resulting in a tense and uncertain atmosphere in the region.

Years-Long Occupation Under Supreme Court’s Scrutiny

According to Punjabi Sharma, the Junior Engineer of the Irrigation Department, this land belongs to the Upper Division Agra Channel in Mathura. Solid structures have long been established along the banks of this drain.

Previously, the department had issued notices on four occasions, but intervention from the Supreme Court mandates immediate action this time. On January 20th, the department's team numbered all the illegal houses and provided a final warning to voluntarily vacate within seven days.

Local Residents' Anger Boils Over

The moment notices were posted, local residents' anger rose dramatically. They argue that they have been residing here for 80 years and possess valid documents. They claim that when the houses were being erected, the authorities remained passive and now unexpectedly plan to render them homeless. The protesting residents have clearly stated they will not vacate their houses and vehemently oppose this administrative action.

Can Demolition Be Halted?

Currently, no mechanical demolition has commenced until January 28, but the department is ready. The notice period has ended, and officials could arrive any time with a significant police force. Meanwhile, affected families are hoping for legal reprieve or political intervention. The challenge for the administration remains clearing encroachments from this sensitive area without igniting major conflict.
