On Friday, Mark Carney took the oath as Canada's 24th Prime Minister, stepping into leadership amid strained relations with the U.S. following Donald Trump's return to power. Carney succeeds Justin Trudeau, who served as Prime Minister since 2015.

Renowned in the banking and financial world, Mark Carney is known for his dependable leadership. From 2008, he served as Governor of the Bank of Canada, successfully stabilizing the nation’s economy during the global economic crisis. In 2013, Carney made history as the first non-British Governor of the Bank of England, playing a pivotal role in mitigating Brexit’s economic impacts.

Focus on Mending US Relations?

With Trump's return causing a rift in the historic Canada-US alliance, one of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s primary objectives will be to mend these relations. The former central banker was selected as the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada on Sunday.

Trudeau's Cabinet of 37 to be Reduced?

According to a Bloomberg report, Mark Carney's new cabinet might be nearly half the size of Trudeau's, featuring 15 to 20 ministers, compared to the current 37 including the Prime Minister.

Trump Pressures, Boycott of U.S. Products in Canada

Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum and threatened to apply expansive tariffs on all Canadian products by April 2, with economic pressures suggesting the border is just a fictional line.

This trade war, coupled with Trump’s notion of making Canada the 51st state of America, is not sitting well with Canadians, who have been protesting the US national anthem at NHL and NBA games. Locals are avoiding American products whenever possible and engaging in a widespread boycott of U.S. goods.
