The Maratha reservation issue has once again grabbed headlines in Maharashtra. The social activist has started an indefinite hunger strike demanding Maratha reservation. For the past two days, Jarange has been protesting at Mumbai's Azad Maidan for his demand. The Fadnavis government has assured that efforts will be made to meet the protesters' demands within the legal and constitutional framework.
Meanwhile, politics over the issue continues. NCP-SP chief Sharad Pawar has released a significant statement on the reservation issue in the state. He stated that a constitutional amendment is essential to resolve issues related to reservations, as there is a set limit on total reservations.
The Future Isn't Secure with Farming Alone
Sharad Pawar mentioned that 80% of Marathas depend on agriculture, but this sector cannot secure their future. Hence, reservation becomes the only option for the Marathas.
He referenced the Supreme Court's limit and the example of Tamil Nadu. He pointed out that the country's highest court has set a 52% limit on reservations. However, the court had also approved 72% reservation in Tamil Nadu.
Pawar emphasized that the role of the central government in reservation matters should be transparent and clear. The country needs a uniform policy to prevent bitterness in society.
Jarange Protests for the Seventh Time
This marks the seventh time Jarange is protesting for the demands of the Maratha community. Jarange described it as the final fight against reservation. Mumbai Police has allowed the protest to continue at Azad Maidan yesterday, Sunday.
