Manipur's political landscape is once again experiencing significant turbulence. Almost three months after the implementation of President's Rule in the state, 21 legislators have penned a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, pushing for the rapid reinstatement of the government. These legislators have warned that if no affirmative action is taken by the Center by May 15, they may assert their claim to form the government themselves.
This letter comprises the names of 14 legislators from the Bharatiya Janata Party, including three who were initially elected from JD(U) and later merged into the BJP. It also includes three from the National People's Party (NPP), two from the Naga People's Front (NPF), and two independents. Furthermore, these legislators enjoy the support of 10 Kuki-Zo lawmakers.
Who Leads This Initiative?
Leading this initiative is BJP legislator Laurem Rameshwar Meitei from Kerao Assembly constituency. The group also features prominent figures like Paonam Brojen (Wangjing Tentha), T. Robindro Singh (Thanga), Md. Achab Uddin (Jiribam), J. Kumo Sha (Karong), and Ram Muivah (Ukhrul).
Contents of the Letter
The letter states that after the imposition of President's Rule on February 13, the public had high hopes for improvement in the situation; however, three months later, significant progress remains elusive. It also expresses concerns over the rising potential for violence and multiple social organizations protesting against the President's Rule, with accusations directed at these legislators for the lack of formation of the government.
The legislators also voiced concerns over the escalating unrest. The letter mentions that numerous organizations have started opposing the President's Rule and are demanding the establishment of a government. Public demonstrations and road gatherings are being held, where the ruling legislators are being criticized for not claiming to form a government and for enforcing the President's Rule.
Turbulence After N. Biren Singh’s Resignation
On February 9, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned due to internal dissent. Shortly after, the central government imposed President's Rule and placed the assembly in a state of 'suspended animation'.
Claim to Form Government After May 15?
The letter emphasizes that the only way to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur is by establishing a popular government. The legislators affirm that if a popular government is reinstated, they will assure their complete commitment and dedication to restoring peace.
According to the legislators, they currently have support from a total of 32 legislators. An unnamed legislator revealed that if they do not receive a positive response from Delhi by May 15, they will assert their claim to form the government independently.
