The President of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu's People's National Congress (PNC) party has achieved a formidable majority in the parliamentary elections. Following this victory, Muizzu once again exhibited defiance towards India. He stated that the recent election results have shown the world that the people of Maldives desire to choose their future autonomously, without any foreign interference.
China-supported Muizzu's ruling People's National Congress (PNC) party has won 68 out of 93 seats while his coalition partners, the Maldives National Party (MNP) won one and the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) secured two victories. Muizzu's comments came a day after the parliamentary election results were announced.
Muizzu declared that the election results had demonstrated to the international community that Maldives is a proud nation that cherishes sovereignty and liberty. He noted that the parliamentary election’s outcome is evidence of the Maldivian people's desire to maintain their faith in Islam and its principles for a brighter future. These results are a message to the world about the vision and intentions of the people of Maldives.
He asserted that the parliamentary election results are also evidence of the Maldivian people’s preference for autonomy over foreign pressure, explicitly rejecting external influences for their prosperous future. Muizzu has repeatedly accused India of intervening in the internal affairs of the Maldives. Last year, Muizzu won the presidential election with the slogan 'India Out'.
Muizzu stated that the election results have given a stern response to those with hidden agendas. It is now clear to those observers what the people of Maldives truly desire.
When Muizzu Showed Defiance to India
Earlier this year in January, President of Maldives Mohamed Muizzu visited China for five days. Upon his return, he made it clear that bullying licenses are owned by no one. Though Muizzu didn't explicitly name any country, it was widely interpreted as a swipe at India.
Known for his pro-China stance, Muizzu met with President Xi Jinping during his five-day trip to China. This visit came at a time when three Maldivian government ministers were suspended for making offensive remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, escalating a diplomatic dispute between both countries.
What is the Dispute Between the Two Nations?
Following Prime Minister Modi's visit to the Lakshadweep islands, three Maldivian government ministers made objectionable comments on pictures of PM Modi's visit. This sparked a diplomatic row between the two countries, which has since intensified after the ministers were suspended following the controversy.
