The pre-monsoon showers in Delhi-NCR not only brought respite from the oppressive heat but also multiplied troubles for its residents. The early morning rain, accompanied by strong winds, filled the streets with water. Moreover, the roof of Terminal-1 at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport gave in, crushing several vehicles underneath. Three individuals were seriously injured, and one person was trapped inside their vehicle.
Upon receiving the information, several fire trucks were dispatched and took control of the situation. An official from the Delhi Fire Service said, "Around 5:30 AM, we were alerted to the roof collapse at Delhi Airport's Terminal-1. Three fire engines have been sent to the location."

Following the incident, the Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, took to social media and said, 'I am personally monitoring the situation at the Terminal 1 roof collapse at Delhi Airport. The first responders are at the site. Airlines have been advised to assist all affected passengers at T1. The injured have been taken to the hospital. Rescue operations are still ongoing.'
The harrowing images of the accident show the massive terminal roof collapsed onto the vehicles, with people trapped inside. They were rescued with great difficulty. Several people have sustained serious injuries and have been taken to a hospital for treatment.
In a sudden turn of weather early Friday, gusty winds began, accompanied by rain. More than an hour of heavy rain flooded areas in Noida, Delhi, and the adjoining regions, providing relief from the intense heat, but leaving the streets inundated with water. Consequently, by daybreak in Delhi-NCR, the traffic came to a standstill. There are also reports of several trees being knocked down due to the strong winds.
Flooded Roads in Noida
In Noida, roads were flooded in multiple locations, which caused considerable trouble for drivers. In Sector-95, the roads were submerged, reducing vehicle movement considerably. Around 6:30 AM, due to the waterlogging, many vehicles broke down. People stepping out of their homes to go to work were greeted with waterlogged roads everywhere.
Weather Department Issued Alert
The Meteorological Department had indicated the likelihood of heavy rain in Delhi on June 29 and 30. Additionally, IMD had forecast thunderstorms with rain accompanied by 30 to 40 km/h winds on June 28th. The IMD predicts that Delhi's maximum temperature for the week might fluctuate between 34 and 37 degrees Celsius, with a minimum temperature around 27 to 28 degrees Celsius.
The weather report also suggested light to moderate rain in Noida from June 28 to July 2, with some gusty winds. During this time, the maximum temperature in Noida may range between 32 to 39 degrees Celsius, with the minimum temperature around 25 to 28 degrees Celsius.
Delhi to Welcome Monsoon
The monsoon usually arrives in Delhi between June 27 and June 29. According to official records, last year it arrived on June 26, while the first monsoon rain of 2022 was recorded on June 30. However, this year the monsoon is expected to arrive around June 29 or 30, which will mark the beginning of the rainy season in Delhi.
According to the weather forecast agency Skymet, the northern limit of the monsoon will cover a large part of the country over the next 3-4 days. It will proceed robustly, covering the Indo-Gangetic plains and a large portion of the northern mountains, moving towards the national capital. The monsoon may arrive in parts of Punjab and Haryana slightly earlier this time and is likely to reach Delhi at any time between June 28 to 30.
