Bulldozer Action Sparks Fear; Adequate Facilities Elude Even With Government Allotted Housing

The Yogi Government resettled Akbarnagar, Lucknow families 10 km away in Vasant Kunj, but they struggle with inadequate living arrangements and absence of essential services.

The community of Akbarnagar in Lucknow has witnessed relentless demolition by bulldozers. Hundreds have been displaced to other houses but they remain distressed. They urge for resolution of their issues as employment is scarce, making it difficult to cover housing installments. Their children's education is being disrupted due to no available work.

While families from Akbarnagar have been rehoused in Vasant Kunj by the Yogi Government, they allege the absence of proper living arrangements. There are no schools or food sources in proximity. Electricity issues persist, forcing them to endure these harsh living conditions.

'Now living so far away that there's no work available'

Sabrina, residing in Vasant Kunj, mourns her husband who died on the day the bulldozers razed Akbarnagar. With four daughters to provide for, she wonders how they will survive without the household work she had previously found.

Similarly, Nasreen is concerned about making ends meet for a household of ten without any job prospects. Razia, also a resident, is worried about affording their new home and pleads for government assistance as work opportunities are non-existent.

Ramesh, another Vasant Kunj resident, drives an e-rickshaw and supports a family of 10 who all sleep on the floor in a house with unreliable electricity, uncertain about what to do next.

'Evictions carried out under Supreme Court orders'

It is reported that each day, around 100 to 150 houses, shops, and showrooms are being demolished, employing over a dozen bulldozers. Approximately a thousand illegal homes are being razed following a Supreme Court order. Many commercial establishments along the banks of the Kukrail River on the bunds are also being dismantled.
