The ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament was overshadowed by a persistent deadlock regarding the voter list revision issue. On the closing day of the session, the proceedings in the Lok Sabha were stalled due to disruptions. The Speaker, Om Birla, announced the adjournment initially until noon and subsequently for an indefinite period due to the unrest.
Before adjourning the proceedings indefinitely, the Speaker outlined the work conducted during this session. He stated that a total of 14 government bills were presented in the Lok Sabha, of which 12 were successfully passed.
He mentioned the special debate on Operation Sindoor held in the Lok Sabha on July 28 and 29, which concluded with the Prime Minister's response. On August 18, 2025, a special discussion on the achievements of India’s space program began. The Speaker also stated that 419 starred questions were included for oral answers during this session, but replies could only be given to 55 questions.
The Speaker noted that all members initially agreed to conduct 120 hours of discussion in the House. The Business Advisory Committee concurred with this plan. However, due to planned disruptions and continuous deadlock, only 37 hours of discussion could be achieved. He emphasized that as public representatives, our behavior and conduct are closely observed by the entire nation.
The Speaker remarked that the public elects us with high hopes, expecting comprehensive and dignified discussions. He observed that the discussions in recent days have not adhered to decorum. Inside the House and within the parliamentary premises, members are raising slogans and carrying placards, engaging in planned disruptions, which deviate from parliamentary traditions.
He said the conduct in this session, the language used, and the manner of slogan-shouting were not in line with parliamentary decorum. The Speaker emphasized the need for respectful discussions, urging members to avoid planned disruptions and slogan-shouting.
Om Birla stressed that our language should be respectful both inside the Parliament and on the campus. He noted that agreement and disagreement are natural in a democracy, and ample time and opportunity have been provided to every member. He encouraged efforts to establish admirable practices in Parliament, suggesting that all political parties reflect on this. During this time, PM Modi was present in the House.
