The Kolkata police have arrested Wajahat Khan, who registered a complaint against social media influencer and law student Sharmistha Panoli. Wajahat is accused of inciting religious sentiments and spreading hate. Reports suggest that he was on the run since June 1 and failed to appear after receiving three notices from police. Subsequently, police conducted several raids in the Garden Reach area and eventually apprehended him.
Accusations of Posting Objectionable Content on Social Media
An FIR was lodged against Wajahat at Golf Green Police Station. He was accused of posting content on social media that was disrespectful, provocative, and obscene towards Hinduism, deities, and traditions. An organization called 'Shri Ram Swabhiman Parishad' formally lodged a complaint against Wajahat on June 2.
Sharmistha Panoli Arrested on May 30 from Gurugram
Previously, Sharmistha Panoli was arrested by Kolkata police on May 30 from Gurugram. She posted a video on social media expressing displeasure with some Muslim Bollywood stars for remaining silent on 'Operation Sindoor'. The language used in the video was deemed communal and objectionable. After her arrest, Panoli deleted the video and apologized.
Meanwhile, Panoli has now been granted interim bail by the court. Under the bail conditions, she cannot leave the country and had to deposit a sum of 10,000 INR with the court. The court emphasized that freedom of expression is not absolute and should not be used to offend religious sentiments.
