The rape and murder of a lady doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College is causing a nationwide uproar. In response to this heinous act, the Federation of All India Resident Doctors Association has announced a nationwide strike starting August 12. They have called upon all resident doctor associations in government hospitals to join the strike, halting work in OPD, elective surgeries, and labs. The RDA has already notified doctors to go on strike.
Junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College are also persistently protesting for justice for the victim. Work at the hospital has come to a standstill. Junior doctors allege that while police have arrested one accused, multiple individuals might be involved in this horrendous crime. They claim that the arrest of the accused, Sanjay Roy, is an attempt to hide more significant facts. CCTV footage from the crime scene area is also being withheld. They have vowed not to resume work until their demands are met.
Medical College Superintendent Removed
Following this terrifying incident, Dr. Sanjay Vashishth, the superintendent of RG Kar Medical College, has been ordered to step down by the health department. He had been the in-charge for a long time. Dr. Bulbul Mukhopadhyay, the hospital’s dean, has been assigned the responsibility. The demand for the superintendent's removal began as soon as the lady doctor's body was found on Friday. However, the health department only issued the removal order 48 hours later.

Death Penalty Demands for Arrested Accused
Following the arrest, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has demanded the death penalty for the accused. She has mentioned that if the victim's family requests a CBI investigation, she would support it and has no objections. She said, “If they don't trust the West Bengal government, they are free to contact any investigative agency. We have no objections.
