After Sanjay Roy was convicted of rape and murder at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata and sentenced to life imprisonment, his mother locked herself inside her home, refusing to meet anyone. The announcement of the verdict led to a gathering of media and the general public outside their home. In a fit of anger, she slammed the door shut.
Malati, Sanjay Roy's 75-year-old mother, pleaded with others to leave her in peace as she shouted, "I have nothing to say. I am ashamed of everything. Please go away." Following this, she secured the door from inside. Prior to her son's conviction, she had shared her feelings with the media.
Malati Roy expressed empathy towards the deceased doctor's parents, being a mother of three daughters herself. She stated her support for whatever punishment her son receives. She remarked, "If the court decides to hang my son, I will have no objections, as his crime has been proven in the eyes of the law. I will mourn alone."
She further mentioned accepting it as a twist of fate, as this is what destiny has written for her. During Sanjay Roy's sentencing at Sialda Court on Monday, no family members were present. When the judge inquired about his family, he mentioned his mother, but said no one has visited him since his arrest.

Sanjay Roy has four sisters, one of whom passed away several years ago. On Saturday, one of his sisters claimed, "There are reports suggesting that my brother was not alone at the crime scene. I hope a comprehensive investigation is conducted to identify any other individuals involved in such a heinous crime. They too deserve punishment."
Locals surrounding Malati's home voiced their belief that Sanjay Roy could not have committed the crime alone, suspecting the involvement of others who are yet to be identified. A neighbor, Urmila Mahto, commented, "I have known him since his childhood. He was enrolled in boxing classes and joined the civic volunteer wing of the Kolkata Police three years ago."
Urmila Mahto shared that after joining the boxing club, Sanjay Roy fell into bad company and began drinking. It was unimaginable that he would be convicted of rape and murder. On Saturday, Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das found him guilty of the crime against the trainee doctor.
