Resident doctors across the country are now divided over the strike following the rape and murder of a lady doctor in Kolkata. Two different statements have emerged from the organizations participating in the strike. After meeting with Union Health Minister JP Nadda, FORDA called off the strike while FAIMA decided to continue it. Following the meeting, FORDA issued a statement saying that the Health Minister had accepted all the demands stated in their letter during the meeting. A committee, including FORDA, will be formed to work on the Central Security Act within 15 days, and official information from the Ministry will be provided soon. Therefore, the decision to call off the strike was made.
Meanwhile, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) announced that the strike would continue, stating that none of their demands, except for the case being handed over to the CBI, which was done at the order of the honorable High Court, were met by the central government. Ensuring doctors' safety remains our priority. Until our demands are met, the strike will continue.
The Union Health Minister also shared a post on X, with photos of FORDA representatives meeting JP Nadda. The post read, "Union Health Minister JP Nadda today met with a delegation from the Federation of Resident Doctors Association. He welcomed their decision to call off the strike in public interest and assured them that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare would address all their concerns to ensure a safe and better working environment."
Case handed over to CBI
Previously, the Calcutta High Court handed over the case to the CBI. This means that Bengal Police will no longer investigate the matter but rather the CBI will handle it. The court ordered all CCTV footage and related documents to be handed over to the CBI by 10:00 AM on Wednesday. The court will monitor the entire case, and the CBI will report to the court periodically. The court also ordered providing security if the victim's family feels threatened.
Following the court's order, the CBI re-registered the case. CBI officials from Delhi will arrive in Kolkata on Wednesday. They will then visit the crime scene with the forensic team. Previously, Kolkata Police had included a sharp officer to strengthen the SIT investigating the case. However, the court handed over the matter to the CBI following protests and the victim's family's demands.

Junior doctors protest at Medical College
On Tuesday, protesting junior doctors created a ruckus at RG Kar Medical College. The protesters broke barricades and entered the hospital, alleging tampering with evidence at the crime scene. Along with resident doctors, medical students also joined the protest. Eventually, additional police force had to be used to pacify and calm the protesters.
Gruesome details revealed in post-mortem report
On Monday, the police handed over the post-mortem report to the family of the lady doctor who was raped and murdered. The report confirmed murder, the nature of injuries before death, and sexual penetration. It revealed that the victim was strangled to death after being raped. The accused strangled her twice, and she died between 3 to 5 AM.
The autopsy report also ruled out the possibility of suicide and confirmed that the victim was murdered after the rape. According to the report, the trainee doctor had blood oozing from her private parts, eyes, and mouth. There were injuries on her face and nails. Her stomach, left leg, neck, right arm, and lips also showed injury marks. Her neck bone was found to be broken into two pieces.

The entire incident
This horrifying incident took place on the night of August 8-9, at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. A 31-year-old trainee doctor was working night shifts with three other doctors that day. Among these, two were from the Chest Medicine Department, one was a trainee, and one was a staff member from the hospital's house staff. That night, all the doctors and staff dined together. Following this, the lady doctor went to sleep in the seminar hall around 2 AM.
Later, Sanjay Roy entered the seminar hall through the back and brutally murdered the lady doctor before raping her. The most shocking part is that the accused was neither hospital staff nor a relative of any patient. He worked as a civic volunteer for the Kolkata Police, assisting with medicine and other needs of the admitted policemen at this medical college. However, on the day of the incident, the accused had no work at the hospital. He came to the hospital's back area to drink alcohol. After consuming alcohol, he watched obscene videos on his mobile phone and then committed the crime.
