Rajya Sabha MP from Aam Aadmi Party, Sanjay Singh has accused Tihar Jail administration of inhumane treatment towards Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. During a press conference held on Saturday, he claimed that Sunita Kejriwal was not allowed to have a face-to-face meeting with Arvind Kejriwal inside Tihar Jail. Instead, officials permitted her to meet him only through a window space. Sanjay Singh also alleged that the jail administration is acting under BJP’s pressure.
Sanjay Singh argued that face-to-face meetings in Tihar are a common occurrence. He stated, 'There is inhuman treatment being meted out to Arvind Kejriwal. Even hardened criminals are allowed to meet with their loved ones within their barracks, yet the three-time Delhi CM is made to communicate with his spouse and PA through a mere window box. This dehumanizing behavior raises the question—why this treatment is being meted out to deliberately humiliate and discourage Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Today the battle is to save democracy and our constitution.'
The AAP leader claimed that a scheduled meeting involving Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and a Delhi MP with Arvind Kejriwal had been abruptly cancelled by Tihar Jail administration, citing security reasons. 'We’ve been informed that the meeting between the Punjab Chief Minister and Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal would take place through a window box. By not allowing these meetings, you are disrespecting the Chief Ministers, making a mockery of Indian law—breaking both Delhi’s CM and my own appointment,' he added.
Sanjay Singh appealed to PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, 'Do not strip Arvind Kejriwal of his rights which are accorded to him constitutionally, democratically, legally, and as per jail guidelines. Do not attempt to become autocrats.' It is noteworthy that Arvind Kejriwal's judicial custody is set to end on April 15, after which he will be presented in court. Prior to that, Delhi High Court had on April 9 validated Kejriwal’s arrest by the ED in the excise policy case, dismissing a plea where the Delhi CM had challenged the legality of his arrest and custody by the ED.
The court in its decision stated that 'Arvind Kejriwal’s repeated disregard for 9 summons issued by the ED over a period of more than 6 months was a significant factor contributing to his arrest. The court observed that if he had complied with the summons issued under Section 50 of the PMLA and engaged with the investigation, he could have presented his case against the evidence gathered by the agency.'
