The investigation into the discovery of partially burnt notes at the residence of Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Verma has intensified. On Tuesday, a committee of three judges appointed by the Supreme Court visited his home at Tughlaq Road, followed by officials from the Tughlaq Road Police Station. A team from the Delhi Police arrived at Justice Verma's house to seal the site where the charred notes were discovered.
Portion of the House Sealed
Sources say the Delhi Police team was on-site for about two hours, accompanied by New Delhi DCP Devesh Kumar Mahala. The team was sent to seal the area where the fire incident took place, upon the request of the investigation committee. Officers from the High Court, assisting the three-member judicial panel, also visited Justice Verma's residence, with the entire process being videotaped.
Room where notes were burned visited by judges
Before this, the team of three judges stayed at Justice Verma's home for around 45 minutes, visiting the room where the notes were burnt. The judges will determine the future course of action and the rules to be followed during the investigation.
Demand to file FIR against the Judge
Meanwhile, a petition filed in the Supreme Court is requesting an FIR be registered against Justice Verma. The matter was mentioned before a bench headed by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, which has agreed to hear the petition. The plea demands directions for Delhi Police to file an FIR since there is no need for the Supreme Court to form a committee of three judges in this case.
The petition seeks to hand over the investigation to the police. It argues that effective and meaningful measures must be taken by the government to combat corruption at all levels within the judiciary. The petitioner argued in court, questioning whether a businessman would be excused from police scrutiny if found in similar circumstances. In response, the court stated, 'Do not make any public statements regarding the matter, and we are prepared to list the petition for hearing.'
